You are a good Person

Stephen was a deacon in the early church. He was also believed to have been the first martyr who was stoned to death in AD34 by men who thought they were doing God a service. Isn’t it amazing how things haven’t changed much in 2000 years? There are still people today perpetuating such hideous crimes in the name of God and various religions. This is a topic for another day.

The killing of Stephen ushered in a great persecution which scattered the early church, bringing about the dispersal of the gospel which was the original intention of God. Believers travelled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus and Antioch, spreading the good news about the Lord Jesus. The Lord’s hand was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord.

News of this reached the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. When he arrived and saw what the grace of God had done, he was glad and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts. He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord. Acts. 11:22-24

I am particularly interested in the testimony about Barnabas; He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith…. We know the Holy Spirit was given by God to all, faith requires a combined effort between God and man; it could be a gift but it could also be developed. “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” Romans 10:17; in other words you build faith in what you hear often or what you allow into your heart. If you fill your heart with faith building words, your faith will grow. The contrary is also true, if you fill yourself with words leaning on doubt, you faith will diminish until there’s probably nothing left but unbelief.

The aspect of Barnabas testimony that interests me the most is actually the fact that he was referred to as a good man. In earlier chapter he was called son of encouragement (Acts. 4:36). Jesus asserts, “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks”. Luke 6:45

What you treasure and store in your heart is totally your choice. I think it was Epictetus who said, “It's not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters”. Your reaction to what happened to you is an indication of your interpretation of what happened to you, in other words, what happened in you.

Based on your reaction, we conclude that you are good or evil because your actions or reactions are the fruits we see and you are classified by your fruit.
Regardless of your conditions or conditioning, it stands to reason that you can be good if you choose to; it’s all up to you.

May God give you the strength of character to be able to act in agreement with your values at all times rather than react in accordance with external stimulus.  You are a good person; begin to show your goodness.
