In the third year of his reign, he made a feast unto all
his princes and his servants; the power of Persia and Media, the nobles and
princes of the provinces, being before him:
When he shewed the riches of his glorious kingdom and the
honour of his excellent majesty many days, even an hundred and fourscore days.
Also Vashti the queen made a feast for the women in the
royal house which belonged to king Ahasuerus.
On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry
with wine, he commanded the seven chamberlains that served in the presence of
Ahasuerus the king, to bring Vashti the queen before the king with the crown
royal, to shew the people and the princes her beauty: for she was fair to look
But the queen Vashti refused to come at
the king's commandment by his chamberlains: therefore was the king very wroth,
and his anger burned in him. Esther 1
This account relates to the reign of Xerxes I (Ahasuerus) who was the Persian king 486–465 BC, he was
probably the king at the peak of the empire.
This reported behaviour of the queen was unprecedented,
hence the decree to unseat her. In a group discussion the other day, we tried
to guess the reasons for the queen’s conduct. Here are some of the reasons
given; pride, influence of alcohol, influence of bad company, complacency, ego,
breaking point, bad attitude, moment of vulnerability, frustration, it’s demeaning and objectification etc.
According to some historic sources, Vashti was the
great-granddaughter of King Nebuchadnezzar II of Babylon; hence it will be
understood if she loathes her Persian husband and her drinking company. She
probably sees the splendour being displayed as her inheritance.
Irrespective of the past, Vashti now seats in grandeur and
all good must be protected because everything of value will be attacked. This moment of blatant disobedience cost the
queen her throne. We may not all seat on gold for a stool but we all have
valuables that must be protected at all cost.
Good name, home and family, good friendship and so on, all these must be
protected because some day, your life or livelihood may depend on any single
one of them.
Ego, pride or bad influences shall not cut you short. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the
devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him,
steadfast in the faith…1Peter 5:8&9
