Defend your Mental Gates

When Jehoram established himself firmly over his father’s kingdom, he put all his brothers to the sword along with some of the officials of Israel.Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eight years. He followed the ways of the kings of Israel, as the house of Ahab had done, for he married a daughter of Ahab. He did evil in the eyes of the Lord. 2 Chronicles 21

It wasn’t enough for the young man Jehoram that he was king; he also had to destroy his siblings and other officials. Isn’t it interesting how a lot of these evil acts were linked to Ahab because of his union with Jezebel? Here is the danger of association; there is usually a clash of values.

A few chapters back we saw David and Solomon build relationships with the Sidonian king Hiram. Perhaps through a desire to foster a stronger bond after the secession, Ahab decided to marry Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal another Sidonian king.

The record of the evil acts perpetrated by Jezebel and her lineage is endless.  You must choose your relationships wisely, don’t risk the future generation through your carelessness. Paul admonished, “Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?”
2 Corinthians 6:14

The above instruction is not only applicable to marriage choice. You are probably not married to a Jezebel but imagine what happens every time you read a novel, watch a movie or listen to music and other material; whose philosophies are you soaking in? Some seemingly harmless media sow an undesirable seed into your subconscious which lay latent for as long as necessary waiting for an opportune moment.

You won’t leave your front door open for all to come and go as they like, why should you leave your mental gates undefended.

Ancient script says “Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.” Proverbs 4:23. Protect your values in every relationship and your integrity will preserve you.
Receive grace for self-control in Jesus’ name.
