Abner was very angry because of what Ish-Bosheth said. So he answered, “Am I a dog’s head—on Judah’s side? This very day I am loyal to the house of your father Saul and to his family and friends. I haven’t handed you over to David. Yet now you accuse me of an offense involving this woman! May God deal with Abner, be it ever so severely, if I do not do for David what the LORD promised him on oath and transfer the kingdom from the house of Saul and establish David’s throne over Israel and Judah from Dan to Beersheba.” 2 Samuel 3:8-10
At this time, Abner, late king Saul’s uncle was the commander in chief of the army of Israel, a position he held throughout the reign of Saul. David had been made king over the tribe of Judah.
It’s fascinating that all the while Saul was hunting David like a partridge of the forest; the people around him knew God had given the kingdom to David.
Abner was happy to serve the house of Saul so long as it serves his personal pride and interests. The moment he got offended, he was quick to remember the promise of God to David and he now wants a covenant between himself and David. Goes to prove a wise man’s assertion; people will help if you first subscribe to their personal radio station
• A covenant with Abner could have hurt David eventually; God is able to deliver on His promises.
• Always be considerate of people on their personal stations
is the lowest level of service; those aiming for greatness must go beyond rendering services only for material gain.
I see God raising help for you in unthinkable quarters, His promises to you shall be fulfilled in Jesus’ name
