You shall Prevail

Now the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel—he was indeed the firstborn, but because he defiled his father’s bed, his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph, the son of Israel, so that the genealogy is not listed according to the birthright; yet Judah prevailed over his brothers, and from him came a ruler, although the birthright was Joseph’s.1Chronicles 5

The ancient Israelite community was a type of primogeniture society. The legitimate first born son inherited a double portion of the father’s wealth because he is supposed to perpetuate the dynasty and this was a huge responsibility.

Reuben was rejected by Jacob on his dying bed for an error from his past which the patriarch found unforgivable. Joseph was preferred by his father and given the birth-right not only because he had always been the preferred son with the coat of many colours but also because of the hardship of his past. In these two cases, the present circumstance was affected by issues from the past. Your past shall not truncate your future.

Reuben was rejected, Joseph preferred but Judah prevailed. Talking about the law of expectation, Brian Tracy asserts, “your expectation of situations and people exerts a powerful invisible influence that causes people to behave and situation to work out just as you expect them to.” He gave examples of situations where another’s expectations may affect you greatly e.g. the expectation of parents, spouses and bosses. Brian Tracy explains that above all your own expectations of yourself is strong enough to override the effects of the expectations of others on you.

Perhaps you carry a scar on your heart which serves as a constant reminder of a negative past; people may have written you off for the same reason. However, I’ve got news for you, God hasn’t and His expectation of you is only glorious perpetually.

Lift up your head, open up your mind and stretch out your wings for you shall prevail. The Lord will come to help you and the universe is conspiring to do you good.

As you redefine your expectations of yourself, may the mighty hands of God be revealed in you and through you in Jesus’ name. You shall indeed prevail.
