Quit the Easy Crowd

In the course of time, Nahash king of the Ammonites died, and his son succeeded him as king. David thought, “I will show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent a delegation to express his sympathy to Hanun concerning his father.

When David’s envoys came to Hanun in the land of the Ammonites to express sympathy to him, the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun, “Do you think David is honoring your father by sending envoys to you to express sympathy? Haven’t his envoys come to you only to explore and spy out the country and overthrow it?” So Hanun seized David’s envoys, shaved them, cut off their garments at the buttocks, and sent them away 1 Chronicles 18

The actions of this new king put him on a collision course with a much stronger power because he was wrongly advised about the intentions of David. A good advice is priceless when you need one but a bad counsel will cost you even when it’s freely given. The propensity to give advice is universal, Brian Tracey asserts, But don't worry; the propensity to ignore it is also universal.

When you need advice, get the best you can find, pay for it if you have to and don’t feel bad. Good advice will guard your life; keep good company, quit the easy crowd. “One is doomed by the company he keeps” -Andrew Carnegie. As it says in the book of Proverbs 13:20 “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.”

Experience they say is the best teacher, but you can’t learn everything from yours alone. Receive the grace to find and the humility to heed good advice in Jesus’ name.
